The Care and Keeping of a Pubescent Girl!

Wow, my first baby is becoming a woman right before my very eyes! It is so exciting and strange all at once!

I recently bought her a copy of "The Care and Keeping of You" by American Girl. It is a book aimed at young girls who are entering puberty. I read it before I gave it to her, and I thought it was great. She and I read parts of it together and she read parts by herself. We've talked about a lot of it.

I thought it was really well done. It talks about all the things a girl going into puberty might be concerned about - bras and periods for one, but also things like taking care of their body, eating well, exercise, etc. Its very thorough and readable and also appropriate and respectful.

I bought her another book at the same time called "Growing Up: Its a Girl Thing" and was horrified - it says it is for ages 8 and up, but includes a detailed description of sex and was just plain crude in many places I thought. Ugh! I wish I hadn't bought it, but at least I read it beforehand and know not to give it to my daughter! It was just "yucky" in my opinion.

But, I recommend that American Girl book very enthusiastically.

I am enjoying this time in Monkey1's life. It is so cool to see her growing up, and to get little glimpses of the woman she will one day become. I used to feel really scared of the teen years, but I find myself looking forward to them now. I know there will be struggles, but over all I have a sense that they will be an amazing time, a wonderful time to watch my child become an adult.

Praise God for His kindness in blessing me with these beautiful children!

I really like this book too. My dd (child number 3) is now 12 1/2. It is a very all encompasing book. Maybe parts of it are too young for an 8 year old but by 12; there's nothing they don't know anyway whether you tell them or they find it out from friends. Better to have something at that point so you can discuss things together rather than leaving the peer group as the only source of info.
